NCTE Denver 2025: A recap

Had an amazing time at NCTE Denver. Met John Warner, one of my personal heroes, and got to listen to him tout the virtues of teaching writing rather than “automation assisted document production.” “AI” is anathema to the English classroom!

Talked with a pair of teachers from the Marshall Islands who use the same article about three Tokelauean teenagers lost at sea for 50 days to introduce Lord of the Flies. It's an incredible story and it was neat to meet others who use it.

Enjoyed presenting about low-stakes journals in the classroom. Teachers were interested in the protocols used to engage students and structure their responses.

Big ups to the folks at myShakespeare.com for organizing a get-together where I met three awesome English teachers from Ohio who let me tag along as we explored downtown Denver and took in the Mile High Tree inside the Christkindlmarket.

The Meow Wolf art exhibit was a surreal embryonic journey through worlds past, present, and future.
Leven Deli legit had two of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Their jalapeƱo cheddar biscuits are stupid good.

I recommend the Acoma House for anyone staying in Denver. A converted schoolhouse, each room was designed by a different artist with its own funky charm.

Last but not least, got to hang with the legendary Chris Coyne in his amazing Boulder brewhouse. Life is all about timing - so glad I could enjoy a variety of Sanitas offerings while the tap room was still open. Hopefully it won't be another 20 years before I'm able to hang with a dude who's as solid as they come.

I ended my presentation with a quote from Henry Miller: “One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” Thank you, Denver, for a fresh perspective on both the work I do and this crazy thing called life. As my Uber driver reminded me, we're all just passengers on a giant rock hurling through space. Here's to making the best of this ride for as long as we're privileged to take it
